Membership Costs Access to the features available on 1901 Census Online is by a credit system. £5 will buy you 500 credits, which can be redeemed against access to census documents and original images, which you can save and print. Be aware that such credits are only valid for 7 days. Alternatively, 1901 Census Vouchers, which can be purchased at the Post Office, The Gift Voucher Shop or the Prezzy Box, can be redeemed against all 1901 census services.

Editor's Verdict: 1901CensusOnline.com offers access to a range of original census data from the UK between 1841 and 1901. Users of the site can access and view the original documents which have been digitized and indexed (so that they are text-searchable) to an extremely high standard. While the site does offer access to a range of additional, supplementary materials, such as military records, Births, Marriages and Death information and a great 'house' search (to discover who has lived in your house in the past!), all materials are limited to the UK only. With this UK focus, this site is primarily going to appeal to UK users, although users from elsewhere may find the records included in the site useful for searching for ancestry further away from home.Access to materials featured on the site is through an innovative 'credits' system, whereby users can access original documents, transcriptions and more through the payment of online credits. 500 credits can be purchased for only £5, and allow the user to view a number of original documents before they expire. The pricing system is such that users can view a transcribed set of data (from the original) for 50 credits, and view data associated with that individual (such as who they lived with, and what their occupation was) for a further 50 credits. For 75 credits, a user can view and print the digital image of the original census document. Alternatively, 1901 Census Vouchers, which can be purchased at the Post Office, The Gift Voucher Shop or the Prezzy Box, can be redeemed against all 1901 census services. We liked this idea, as we thought some users may like to purchase such vouchers as gifts for other family members - a nice touch! While this system is perfect for those users simply wishing to do some supplementary research, or perhaps confirm details already known, this would be an expensive way to research a whole family tree. We were also a little disappointed by the short expiry date on all credits (just 7 days), meaning that users may have to continually replace unused credits in the course of their research. If you're already a member of another subscription site, especially one in our top ten, you're highly likely to already have access to this UK based data and thus, membership to 1901CensusOnline would be surplus to requirements. If not, this site is great to check details or make cursory searches, and the credits system means you don't have to pay for an expensive subscription to do so. If, however, you want to conduct a lengthy search, you'd probably be better off with a short term subscription to a site offering access to a greater variety of materials.
