Editor's Verdict: BMDIndex is a UK-based site offering complete access to UK Birth, Marriage and Death records between 1837 and 2005. As a UK focussed site this is a great research tool for UK based users, but perhaps less use for a user from elsewhere (unless they are performing a particularly in-depth investigation and require trans-national records). This site has been the recipient of a number of prestigious awards from within the genealogy community, including being named as the 'Best BMD Site' for 2008 by Your Family Tree magazine, and the 'Best Value Award' from Family History Monthly! This pedigree is well earned - with more than 250 million recorded events, spanning almost 170 years of British history, we're sure that these records will be beneficial to a great number of genealogy enthusiasts out there, whether beginner or expert.BMDIndex is powered by TheGenealogist.co.uk, and users of that site get free access to all records held at BMDIndex. This also means that the same 'Smart Search' function used at TheGenealogist.co.uk is accessible through BMDIndex, allowing users to get the best out of their subscriptions by searching many records at once, and cross referencing results using powerful search technology. We were also really impressed by the provision of Surname Distribution maps, which digitally display a breakdown of where your family name features most in the UK. This can provide particularly interesting research leads for the experienced genealogist, and for those with less experience, can simply prove very interesting as a supplement to existing research. One thing to note when using BMDIndex however, is that the £5, three month membership provides 50 'credits' which can be used to access records. Surname Distribution Maps cost 10 credits each, while regular searches cost 1 credit. If you run out of credits during the 3 month period, you must pay a further £5 to continue using the service. While the credit system has worked elsewhere to ensure that users pay for only what they intend to use, here, we find that it is a little restrictive. Still, for their £5 users also get 90 days free access to RootsMagic, which will further improve their research opportunities. As is common with such focussed sites, if you are already a member of a more expensive subscription site, such as Ancestry.com, this site is unlikely to offer anything new. If you are currently relying on libraries and public records for your search, however, this site will speed up your search considerably for very little outlay.
