DeathLibrary offers unlimited access
to a range of death records, obituaries and associated
research materials. From $14.99 a month, users can search a wide variety of useful genealogical
materials. Records are available on anyone in the US,
Canada, UK, Australia and Western Europe, and return
detailed search results including a variety of additional
(and highly useful) pieces of data. As well as dates of
death, users get information on name, age, birthplace,
birth date, marriage information, employment,
memberships, hobbies, spouse information, children and
information on close relatives.
This site is perhaps not ideally suited to those new to
family history research and genealogy. DeathLibrary is
not only a little limited in its focus - offering access
primarily to death dates and information - but it is also
extremely difficult to navigate at times owing to the myriad of
links which litter the homepage (and indeed, many of the
subsequent pages). The site is, however, inexpensive to
join, and if access to death records and obituaries for
the countries covered is all you are interested in, this
site could be for you. DeathLibrary does offer some
additional services, but many are questionable in their
application to genealogy. We're not sure how access to
services such as Cell Phone Trace, the Sex Offenders
register, Criminal Records, Civil Records, Credit Checks,
DMV Records, and your 'All-in-One Background Check' is
particularly relevant to genealogical research, and found
their inclusion a little odd.
That said, if you're interested in these records (for
whatever purpose) paying the additional fees could prove
fruitful for you if you wish to trace a missing family
member, for example. We were particularly impressed by
the range of supportive materials featured on
DeathLibrary, with the site offering a range of helpful
resources to aid in your research. With FAQs and email
support available seven days a week too we were
pleasantly surprised by how supportive DeathLibrary is,
especially for novice users. The site does, however, lack
any software to produce a family tree, and this is a
significant issue for the serious genealogist.
DeathLibrary certainly doesn't offer access to the same
comprehensive record collection as some of the sites we
review. Certainly our highest rated site in this
category, Ancestry.com offers a great deal more for a
similar monthly subscription cost. We would suggest
checking out another site, such as Ancestry.com, which
offers a bit more for your monthly subscription, and
includes some great family tree software. Please note that Death Library has now been discontinued.
