At No1Reviews we are always impressed
by sites that offer a great service to our users, and do
so for free. DistantCousin is a great site that offers
users access to a vast collection of genealogical
records, from more than 1500 different sources,
absolutely free of charge. Users can view the original
scanned images of many records and historical documents
from a wide variety of sources, such as newspaper
obituaries, city directories, census records, ship lists,
school yearbooks, military records, and more. We love it
when a site does exactly what it promises, and
DistantCousin cannot be faulted in providing access to a
wide range of resources without charging a penny.
The focussed genealogy search that DistantCousin employs
to accurately search through its six million sets of
records ensures that users find what they are looking for
quickly and efficiently. The search facility allows users
to filter their search results by a particular record
set, but also offers suggestions as to whether the
searched function appears in other records. Another
element of DistantCousin that is particularly exciting is
the regular process of updating and improvement of
sources. The homepage announces the new records featured
each week, and we were impressed to see a number of
unusual records included amongst the more common
including the West Virginia University's record of
faculty and students, the Ivy League directory of faculty
and students and the 'Story of the 12th Infantry', for
example. The search function on DistantCousin also allows
users to search by US state, and to filter searches by
region or city, too, and we felt this was a useful
addition that would help many genealogists in their
research.
There were some elements of DistantCousin.com that were a
little disappointing, however. The site does not feature
hosted family tree construction software - something that
comes as standard on a number of other sites. This means
if members use DistantCousin as the primary source for
their research, they will have to invest in some family
tree construction software if they wish to complete a
family tree using their research. Also, the absence of
any international records (such as from the UK, Canada,
Ireland or Australia, for example) is a little
disappointing. That said, this site is completely free,
and we think it offers a useful service that many
genealogists will appreciate. If you're not already a
member of another subscription site, we would certainly
suggest giving DistantCousin.com a go if your research is
based in the US.
