At No1Reviews.com we love it when our
users get something great for free!
Dynastree.com is a great new site, which
offers its users the opportunity to build their family tree
online completely free of charge and without obligation to
upgrade to a premium service. What we really loved was that
Dynastree encourages all of its users to engage their
family members in the process of building the tree, too, so
that tracing your family history really does become a joint
family pastime. It's really easy to contribute too, as each
member simply adds his or her name and email address to the
database and waits for 'permission' to edit the tree by the
person who founded it. The whole process takes a few
seconds, and is great for getting the whole family involved
in genealogy.
As far as free membership goes, Dynastree only offers the
creation of a family tree online as standard. This is a
great service - it's easy to use and secure, and of course
great fun. The bright, colourful appearance is also great
for getting children involved in genealogy and we thought
it helps to make the whole site that little bit more
appealing to everyone. In terms of functionality, dynastree
can stand up against other larger sites offering similar
services (such as our No. 1 ranked site in this category,
Ancestry.com) for free, though
doesn't offer quite the same capacity to add additional
documents to your tree as some (such as transcribed records
or copies of original documents). Dynastree also accepts
partially created family trees in the GEDCOM format, which
is great news for those who have been working on a family
tree alone and wish to open it up to their wider family (or
even make sure there is a digital copy stored online for
safe keeping). All in all, the family tree builder is
certainly not bad quality, and if you like it, you may wish
to consider upgrading to premium membership and taking
advantage of some of the more advanced features offered to
subscription users.
If you're a premium user a wide range of additional options
open up for you to explore. There really are too many to
list here, but we particularly liked the 'lists' feature
and automatic matching. 'Lists' allows users to generate
automatic lists from their family trees, holding
information such as birthdays or anniversaries, so users
never forget such events in the future! Automatic matching
allows users to search through other family trees on
Dynastree to find possible overlaps which may add data to
their existing family tree. If you really enjoy using
Dynastree, there is a 14 free trial of the subscription
options so that you can give them a try. Either way, as a
great quality free site, it's certainly worth giving
Dynastree a try!
