FamilyAncestry is a free UK-based
resource site, listing a number of useful genealogical
resources. As well as listing a range of potentially
useful sources for genealogical information and records,
the site also provides users with a comprehensive record
of the historical development of the English population -
from the Viking invasions all the way through to the 20th
century. Whilst this is extremely interesting stuff,
we're not sure how relevant this is to someone wishing to
delve deeper into their specific family history by
researching their genealogy and constructing a family
tree.
This, it seems, is a bit of a theme with many of the
resources currently available on FamilyAncestry. The site
also features a vast listing of common given names and
surnames, with their associated meanings listed
alongside. Again, while this may prove interesting as a
sideline, it's not exactly going to help the average
genealogist move on with their research. The family
history and genealogy glossary, however, may prove
useful, especially for a novice genealogist that is just
starting to investigate their family history. Similarly,
advice on how best to construct your family tree and how
to take your research further may benefit a lot of users.
In short, it's a bit of a mixed bag on
FamilyAncestry.com.
That said, the site is presently in a state of
construction. While there is a list of useful resources,
it is nowhere near as extensive as that featured on other
free sites. While the site does suggest that improvements
are happening constantly, we have a feeling that they
might take a while to really get going and users would
benefit from checking out other sites that may prove more
useful in the meantime. If you're interested in really
taking your research to a new level, try our top rated
subscription site, Ancestry.com, which has a wide range
of resources available. If you're interested in free
sites, check out our listings for a range of free
resources which are slightly more developed than
FamilyAncestry and may prove a little more beneficial to
the average genealogist.
