Footnote.com is a fantastic site which
offers users the opportunity to view, save and print
original genealogical records. Footnotes.com offers
access to more than 60 million original images,
searchable for free! Footnotes offers two membership
options, including a free membership option which allows
users to experience most of the benefits that paying
members have, without paying a penny! Free users can view
and search member uploaded images; upload, annotate and
print your own images and annotate the images of other
members. Free users can also create their own footnote
pages, in the same manner as All-Access members.
We were extremely impressed by the 'footnote page'
option, which allows users to construct pages to display
information gained from original records. This service
allows users to construct pages, using an innovative and
simple to use 'page-builder', that can profile a
particular individual in your family tree and highlight
all associated original information. We really liked the
way that this system allowed users to show off the fruits
of their research, and, because 'footnote pages' are open
to public viewing (for free members), members of your
family can log on and check them out. While this feature
is pretty cool, we were a little disappointed that this
is a substitute feature for actual family tree
construction software, something that we think is
important for a serious genealogist.
We love it when a site offers access to original
documentary information, because we feel that such
materials are what makes genealogy a fun and interesting
pastime. We're sure that experienced and novice
genealogists can benefit from these records and will use
them to benefit their research. What's more, All-Access
users have the opportunity to explore a number of premium
records (in their original form, after digitization) and
are able to annotate, comment, print and save such images
for future use. We particularly loved the way that
Footnote.com displays its resources by historical era,
and think that the feature allows users to better explore
the resources available in a way that other sites (even
some of our highest rated sites) have not achieved. The
site does achieve a level of navigability that is
commendable, especially given the number of resources
hosted on the site.
If you're not already a member of a subscription site,
Free membership to this site could be a valuable addition
to your resources as you embark upon your genealogical
search. It's likely if you have a subscription elsewhere
that the information included here won't be new to you,
but it's always worth giving it a try anyway!
