Editor's Verdict:
As a partner site of Ancestry.com,
Genealogy.com has access to many of
the same features that are enjoyed by members of our
No. 1 rated site in this category. With more than 170
million names in collective, merged family trees and
with more than 250,000 new records added each week,
this site certainly has a lot to offer. The site
focuses mostly upon US users, and as a result it's
offerings for users outside of the US are limited, even
with the most expensive membership option. If you are a
non-US user we certainly suggest trying an alternative
nationally focussed site, or even our No. 1 rated site
in this category, Ancestry.com, which operates with the
largest collection of international records in the
world.
That said, there are a number of excellent features of Genealogy.com which make it a great option for a US user. All membership subscriptions to Genealogy.com come with a free 14-day trial, and once subscribed, users receive a full version of Family Tree Maker. Family Tree Maker allows you to compile, grow and share your family tree with other users. It is an excellent resource to construct your family tree to quickly merge new facts and records from the web into your tree and use user interactive maps to explore the places where your ancestors once lived. Finally, Family Tree Maker allows users to create professionally printed, beautiful documents to reflect the success of your genealogical research. We were also extremely impressed by the community feel that is generated by Genealogy.com. User forums, message boards and home page profiles allow users to contact each other and support each other in their research. Users can also submit their family trees to the World Family Tree section on Genealogy.com so that they can be searched by other members and used to generate sections of other user's family trees. It should be noted however, that access to World Family Tree is only available to members who have gold subscription. There are a number of membership options available on Genealogy.com, which vary in terms of their information provision and access to records. Basic membership opens up access to the genealogy library with access to a number of US records (Birth, Marriage and Death statistics and military records), whilst Deluxe membership includes access to World Family Tree, too. Gold membership includes access to complete US Census information and information from passenger immigration records. If Genealogy.com feels like the right site for you, we would suggest that Gold Membership provides access to the most useful information, and includes free complete technical support. Generally, we were impressed by the features offered by Genealogy.com and its complementary access to a range of different US records. What is not included however, is access to any international records (UK, Australia, Canada and beyond) which does, in our opinion, restrict the comprehensiveness of genealogical research. Certainly, this is what sets Ancestry.com, our highest rated site in this category, apart from other sites in the top ten. If you are content with US-only information, then Genealogy.com could be the site for you!
