Genealogy.org is a great site listing
a range of genealogy resources and weblinks, absolutely
free! Genealogy.org is a site which is twinned with
FamilyHistory.com, and shares all of the same features -
US Census information 1790-1930, military records,
biographies, court and land records, immigration and
passenger lists and more. Both sites have the awesome
pedigree of being powered by Ancestry.com, and so rank
high in our estimations! We love sites like this one,
that aim to open up the web's free genealogical resources
to a wider audience, as they make it much easier for our
users to get their hands on the wealth of free
information that is available all over the internet!
We particularly loved the 'Top Genealogy.org Sites'
record, which lists the sites that are most visited by
Genealogy.org's users, in order of popularity. This list
is produced based on hitrate, and is a pretty good
indication of where the best resources lie for family
history research on the Internet. Many sites on the list
are subscription sites, but there are a great number of
free sites there too, which are of great use to those who
are researching family history on a budget. This site
also allows complementary access to Family Tree Maker
2009, the finest family tree construction software
available online (and featured in Ancestry.com), through
a partnership with Ancestry.com. This is excellent,
because it opens up access to this amazing piece of
software to all users!
Genealogy.org also gives a helping hand to those who are
new to genealogical research by providing a helpful
getting started guide for everyone to check out, as well
as a helpful listing of the major events of the FGS
Society, so that you could attend and meet those with a
similar interest in genealogy.
Users from the UK will be disappointed to hear that the
site focuses mostly on materials and resources from the
US. There are however, a few listings of UK resources,
and the site also provides a comprehensive list of sites,
which would of help in finding free UK resources.
Generally, we were very impressed with Genealogy.org (and
it's sister site, FamilyHistory, which provides exactly
the same information), and would encourage all our users
to hit the link below to check out what it has to
offer!
