GenealogyBuff is a free site intended
to 'kickstart your genealogy research' by providing a
great starting point from which to begin your research.
We're not exactly sure how useful some of the materials
included on GenealogyBuff are, and are sure that many of
the resources are available elsewhere on innumerable free
websites. If you're not already a member of another site
(either free or subscription), this may indeed be a great
place to start your research, but we don't think
GenealogyBuff will satisfy your thirst for information
for long! Another point of note is that GenealogyBuff is
US and Canadian based, and so is of little use to UK
users unless they intend to research their US-based
ancestry.
That said there are some innovative collections held on
GenealogyBuff. Of particular note is the listing of
cemetery and memorials in the US, which could be useful
to discover more about the final resting place of your
relatives. Not only does this list the content of some of
the memorials, but indicates contact email addresses for
individuals who live in the nearby area and may wish to
find a particular grave on your behalf, and take a
photograph. The site also has a comprehensive list of
research tools, hosted on other sites, which may be
useful in taking your genealogical research a little
further. We were also pretty impressed with the reviews
of genealogy software that are included on GenealogyBuff.
These offer opinions as to the best family tree building
software on the market and are written by experts in the
genealogy industry (And so are well worth a read!).
User forums on a variety of topics help GenealogyBuff
feel like a genuine online community - something that we
often view as a priority on sites such as this. Users
have the opportunity to engage in forums on a number of
topics, including lost or missing relatives and
obituaries, and can even submit their own research to
GenealogyBuff so that it may be included in the site in
the future. This means that users have the opportunity to
actually be a part of GenealogyBuff and participate in
the gradual improvement of researchable materials.
While this site is never going to compete with sites such
as Ancestry.com, US and Canadian users may find some
useful resources here, and the community feel will
undoubtedly appeal to many. If this site seems like one
