The Origins Network
is a premier collection of genealogical sites focusing on
providing source material for users from the UK and
Ireland. The OriginsNetwork is in a unique position, with
links with a number of genealogical organisations, such
as the Society of Genealogists, the National Library of
Ireland, and the Borthwick Institute for Archives
allowing exclusive online access to important primary
sources, abstracts and index databases. OriginsNetwork
users have the opportunity to tailor their membership
choice to reflect the primary focus of their research,
choosing either British Origins, Irish Origins or Scots
Origins, or 'Total Access' which allows complete
comprehensive access to all of the records held at the
OriginsNetwork. Scottish users will be pleased to know
that access to the Scottish records is completely free of
charge to all users.
Many of the collections are materials that, outside of
the OriginsNetwork, would only be available by travelling
to the national archives in the UK and Ireland. There are
a number of major collections - pre 1837 marriage
records, one of the premier collections of will extracts,
court hearing listings, poor law records and
apprenticeship listings. All of this is available on top
of a vast collection of more traditional records, such as
birth, marriage and death listings, census records and
the electoral roll. Users have a unique opportunity to
interact with materials directly, being able to save,
print and zoom in on copies of the original documents (or
their transcribed counterparts). The innovative search
function, which seems a little unprepossessing at the
outset, is actually an 'intelligent' search function
which searches additional records which could be useful
in your search. We were delighted with what the
OriginsNetwork offered its users, especially if you are
only interested in specific records from certain
jurisdictions, where you can get access to premium
records for a relatively low price.
That said, if you require total access you would find the
membership cost a little overpriced at almost £50
for annual membership. Considering this site only
provides information for the UK and Ireland, we think
this site could be a little cheaper, especially when
compared to what Ancestry.com
(our highest rated site in this category) has to offer.
Even so, we would still recommend using the
OriginsNetwork if your search is restricted to the UK or
Ireland, as the quality of its resources is well worth
the membership fee. Better still, if you're searching
your Scots ancestry, this site really can't be beaten as
it offers the same amazing resources, absolutely free
(see our ScotsOrigins
review for more information)! If this sounds like
