RootsUK is a site devoted to providing
users with a range of accessible genealogical materials
specifically related to UK family history. RootsUK allows
users to search the Electoral Roll, Birth/Marriage/Death
Records, Census records (1841-1901) and more, and do so
completely free! As a free site we were extremely
impressed at the extent to which records were openly
available, in many cases having complete records which
are featured on other paid sites. Having such a wide
range of resources is extremely important in making it
possible to really improve the extent of an existing
family tree, or to build a new one from scratch, and we
were certainly impressed by what RootsUK offers its
users, completely free of charge.
Powered by TheGenealogist.co.uk, another site in our
listings, RootsUK has a number of additional, innovative
tools that are available for a small fee. Users can
purchase 'credits', which are charged at £5 for
100, to redeem against the premium services that are
available on RootsUK (through its parent site,
TheGenealogist.co.uk). Users can view, save and print
original documents or transcribed documents by expending
credits, or use the innovative SmartSearch function.
SmartSearch allows users to search by a single entry and
then expands the search automatically to bring up results
which are deemed relevant, such as relatives' records, or
the additional records for a particular individual.
SmartSearch means that a user searching a named
individual by his birth date will also be able to view
(and cross reference) the information displayed on that
persons death certificate and marriage record, and then
simultaneously view the records of their spouse and
children where appropriate. By searching for just one
individual, users can find their family tree expanding by
a considerable amount as SmartSearch significantly speeds
up the search process.
Also available for premium users is access to surname
distribution maps, which digitally display a breakdown of
where your family name features most in the UK. This can
provide particularly interesting research leads for the
experienced genealogist, and for those with less
experience, can simply prove very interesting as a
supplement to existing research. As is common with such
focussed sites, if you are already a member of a more
expensive subscription site, such as Ancestry.com, this
site is unlikely to offer anything new. If you are
currently relying on libraries and public records for
your search, however, this site will speed up your search
considerably for very little expense. If you could
benefit from this service, check it out now by hitting
