Editor's Verdict:

The OriginsNetwork is a premier collection of genealogical sites focusing on providing source material for users from the UK and Ireland. The Origins Network is in a unique position, with links with a number of genealogical organisations, such as the Society of Genealogists, the National Library of Ireland, and the Borthwick Institute for Archives allowing exclusive online access to important primary sources, abstracts and index databases. ScotsOrigins is the Scottish branch of the OriginsNetwork and is thus focussed on providing an excellent collection of Scottish genealogical materials for users wishing to develop their family history research along these lines.

There are a number of major collections featured on ScotsOrigins - pre 1837 marriage records, birth, marriage and death listings, census records and the electoral roll. Users have a unique opportunity to interact with materials directly, being able to save, print and zoom in on copies of the original documents (or their transcribed counterparts). The innovative search function, which seems a little unprepossessing at the outset, is actually an 'intelligent' search function which searches additional records which could be useful in your search.

While we really can't complain about the source materials on offer, it should be noted that the site offers less unusual record collections than those that feature on the British Origins and Irish Origins sites (both of which charge a standard monthly subscription fee, and do not offer any resources for free). ScotsOrigins does of course offer the same access to the OriginsNetwork discussion board and expert articles as those provided on the subscription sites in the group, something that we were very excited to see. These are high quality additions to the site, with many contributions being made by industry leaders and academics. This, combined with user sites on specific topics and the monthly newsletter, means that being part of ScotsOrigins really means being part of a great online genealogical community.

If you're researching your Scots ancestry, this site really can't be beaten as it offers the same amazing resources as it holds for the UK and Ireland, absolutely free of charge. With a high quality collection, which can be viewed, zoomed, downloaded and printed as often as you like, we're extremely impressed to find membership to ScotsOrigins available free of charge.
