SearchYourGenealogy suggests that its
users have access to one of the Internet's largest online
search tools, and even though there does seem to be a lot
going on here, we're not sure how well
SearchYourGenealogy can actually stand up to its claim.
Our research shows that less than 2,000 people view the
site every month, a tiny figure compared to other similar
sites, such as Ancestry.com (our highest rated site in
this category), which records traffic figures of more
than 50,000 individuals a month from the US alone. We
really do think that if SearchYourGenealogy was as good
as it says it is, it would be a little more popular with
the genealogical public.
It's not all bad though - the site does offer access to a
vast range of research materials, most of which are
featured on the Ancestry.com database. Not only does
SearchYourGenealogy allow users to check out Birth,
Marriage and Death records, Military records, Census
Records, Immigration records and Criminal and Court
records, it also provides a range of more interesting
records that may excite genealogists who have perhaps
seen other records before. Users can explore their family
heraldry using the family crest lists and check lien
records dating back more than 200 years. If you like what
you find, SearchYourGenealogy makes your clan crest badge
and heraldry available to purchase, too.
SearchYourGenealogy also allows users to create their own
family tree or upload a GEDCOM from elsewhere to continue
working a partially completed tree. We were slightly
shocked that, in order for users to actually create their
trees on SearchYourGenealogy, they must first download a
bundle of software, and install it on their PC's. With
most other sites managing to host the software online and
integrate it within their websites, we do feel that this
is a little unnecessary. The fact that users don't
actually use the site to host their own trees also means
that users can't search other trees on
SearchYourGenealogy in order to develop their research or
throw up new matches.
While there are certainly some good features available on
SearchYourGenealogy, such as a wide collection of
searchable resources, it is highly likely that a focus on
offline family tree building means the site isn't really
as popular as other sites such as Ancestry.com. If you're
still interested in giving it a go however, membership is
pretty cheap, so hit the link below to try it out!
