Since my forced retirement in 1991, I started in 1993/4 collecting data of my family and predecessors and wrote it down by hand.
In 2006 I was introduced to information on the genealogies of old families in South Africa published in books by NA Coetzee and CC de Villiers and this boosted my thirst to the knowledge of my ancestors as well as those of my wife and her parents.
In the meantime I had to cope with new technologies and had to make myself computer literate.
This said and done I had been introduced to MyHeritage in 2006 and after many hours in front of my computer collecting and registering data collected of members of the families that my wife and myself belonged to, I approached MyHeritage for membership of their Internet programme dealing with familily registers and family histories.
On the 7th June 2009 , with the help and guidance of the very capable staff at MyHeritage, I published my first Du Plessis, Minnaar and Reynders Family Register.
The MyHeritage Website is very user friendly and easy to follow and if and when I had a hiccup in completing or entering data I could only sent an email to MyHeritage and their staff would contact me without delay and help me sort out the problem.
On MyHeritage's recommendation I advanced to the Premium Pakkage from the 4th July 2011. This was done to cope with the still increasing information gathered from family and especially other related Family Trees on MyHeritage. This not only gave me the opportunity to extend my own data base but it also brought me in contact with family members that I never new about and which I now met through their own Family Register Sites.
Through these contacts I managed to find the one "missing" link in my Du Plessis Family Register which completed our Register running from Jean Prieur du Plessis born on the 26th April 1638 until as recently as the 15th July 2014 the birthdate of Zuandri du Plessis.
When I was notified by MyHeritage during July 2014 that payment of subscription fees were due I found myself in a predicament. Being a 74 year old Pensioner living on a small pension with my wife and having had various setbacks the last six months with my health, I could not see my way clear to pay the required subscriptionfee and had no other option but to resign my membership of MyHeritage. Once again MyHeritage surpriced me with the following notification "In addition to that, I would like to inform you that as you are a valuable user here in MyHeritage, I have given you a Premium site subscription for your DuPlessis, Minnaar en Reynders Register Web Site for free for the period of six months. "
Indeed an organisation or Institution to be proud of. I hope that I will be able to save enough over the following six months so as to be able to fullfill my oblgations fot the following six months of membership.
