This site should be called One Great Robbery. I received an email over a year agao asking me to try it free. To do so you had to enter card details so I used a prepaid card I have for holiday abroad money as it was empty at the time. I then decided it was not much good so declined the offer to sign up. Then over a year later I topped up the card and you guessed it they stole $79 out of my holiday cash. I have e-mailed them and got this back:-

You were billed $79.95 because when you signed up on our system you selected a Yearly subscription.

We do not offer invoice billing, and our customer service representatives are not paid on a commission. They have no financial incentive to lie or cheat you into a subscription. The simplest explanation of what happened here is that you misunderstood what you signed up for.

Based on the tone of your message, it seems likely that you will continue to consider us to be thieves and liars. As surprising as it might seem to you, we do take offense at that. However, we do sleep well at night, precisely because we try our hardest to offer a good and useful product at a fair price in an honorable way.

But in light of maintaining our reputation, we will point out that:

- You came to our website

- You made a decision to subscribe

- You clicked and entered sufficient information to create a billing for a Yearly subscription

- We accepted that you meant what you did

- We acted only in accordance with what you did

- We neither forced nor constrained you to do any of these things

We have been in business for ten years. Hundreds of thousands of people have come to our site and interacted with our billing system without incident. Our renewal rates are consistent with industry norms. The genealogy market has seen scams come and go, but they do not last. We could not stay in business for ten years if we didn't offer a good product at a fair price in an honorable way.

These hundreds of thousands of people who have come to our site by and large accept responsibility for their own decisions and actions. They subscribe, use the site and cancel at their pleasure. They understand that if they sign up for a quarterly subscription, they will pay for a quarterly subscription and have use of the product for 3 months. If they change their minds about a 3 month subscription, they nevertheless live with that because they accept responsibility for their own actions. I hope you can accept some responsibility for your own actions here, and be willing to acknowledge that perhaps we aren't thieves or liars or cheats, but that you and we simply had a miscommunication.

I have emailed them numerous times since and heard nothing. The answer machine they leave on says they will call you back - they don't. DO NOT GET SCAMMED KEEP OFF IT.

In summary, I would not recommend One Great Family to a friend.
