Excellent database for serious research

There are so many features to praise... their Census database is a huge plus, their "green leaf" feature has fantastic power for finding tidbits faster than you could possibly do on your own, the power to choose public or private tree-making is another plus, the DNA project is another one.

In summary, I would recommend Ancestry.com to a friend.

Well I really don't have any bad points. I have been using this site for awhile now. Just recently I did the dna testing for one reason and was blessed with something extra. I did not know that your dna results were compared to others that has also taken the test. To make a long story short ancestry .com has found my father. This is a question I have been wanting the answer to for my 36 years of living.

In summary, I would recommend Ancestry.com to a friend.

I have been on ancestry for almost 3 years now that amount of information that I have found has been tremendous. I have learned so much from my family history that I did not know before. But I do think alot of people go on to ancestry without really understanding exactly what the site is. It is a compilation of various state and federal public records. Ancestry does not write any of the information...they only organize it for the use of its members. So, if incorrect information, incorrect spellings, wrong dates, lack of information on documents, etc, are found by members, it is not the fault of ancestry. The incorrect information comes from the public records this way, which can happen for alot of reasons(i.e. transcription errors, lack of documentation from old records, lack of education and knowledge that was much more common in the mid 1900s and before, etc). Also found on ancestry is a compilation of members input, such as their own public family trees, photos, stories. These trees are made soley by ancestry members, again-NOT ancestry. Other family trees can be great as guides, but must never be taken as facts.... (Read the full review)

Ancestry

Ancestry is the best site overall, you can build your family tree, attaching records to individuals for source documentation. It is an easy site to navigate and anytime I have had problems their "help" staff has always top notch in getting my problem resolved quickly.

I only have two negative things to say:
1) I wish there were more actual records, marriage and death records especially rather than just indexes.

2) There should be a bigger warning about that "shaking green leaf" for new users, while it is helpful - it is not "proof" but merely a suggestion to be checked out. I have run across user submitted trees that are clearly erroneous with the same individual with 4 or 5 census records for the same year attached to that one person.

In summary, I would recommend Ancestry.com to a friend.
