Here's my main problem with Findagrave

Findagrave allows a single member to possess hundreds of thousands or probably soon to be millions of memorials. This simply isn't fair and encourages sick individuals to horde memorials, apparently to stroke their ego's at the expense of the families of the dead. Let me give you an example: My father's aunt's findagrave memorial is owned by someone who is in no way related to her, doesn't give a whit about her or her family, and refuses to transfer her memorial to a family member (me) who shares not only her genetics but her family name. I've been trying to gather my family's memorials under a single umbrella and am unable to do so due to this morbid compulsion with obtaining cyber corpses.

I think most findagrave subscribers are like me and are only interested in their own families and I can not for the life of me comprehend why anyone would want to own hundreds of thousands of memorials of dead people completely unrelated to them.

Findagrave, please change your rules and put a stop to this absurd competition for being the greatest cyber corps owner, it's becoming psychotic.

This being said, I still use it because it... (Read the full review)

Find a grave members

I was a member for over 7 years and the one thing I noticed, that members actually list their own rules and regulations under their profiles.

Instead of introducing themselves, they rant and rave about what to do, how to do it and when to do it.
One thing came to mind over the years, those who listed the rules very seldom followed the rules. Many members just add names, no info what so ever, while others, bring the people to life...linking them to family, adding birth info...going the extra mile, traveling the cemeteries.
I became discouraged by Find and Grave due to those members, mentioned above and yes you know who you are.

Recently one of my grave photos was removed from a memorial I created in 2009 and was transferred to another members memorial, that she just created over the summer of 2016.
No notice from Find a grave, no explanation as to why they took my picture as per the other members request...just delete and add to her.

When I questioned it, no response, when I deleted it Find a Grave deleted my access to all the memorials I created over the past 7 years, no explanation. Get this the member that stole... (Read the full review)

Not a Place to Honor the Dead

1. Findagrave is an company that makes millions of dollars from death memorials created by volunteers and from individuals that are grief stricken or researching family ancestry. They sell adds for each grave submission or sponsor memorials to earn money.

2. Anyone that is registered with the site can create a memorial and add it to the site. Once someone creates the memorial they "own" it. The family members have no way to remove the memorial if it is against their wishes.

3. The creator of a memorial can write a bio for someone who they do not even know. You cannot rely on accuracy. Often the information is gathered from obits in newspapers or from search engines on ancestry sites. A family member has nothing to say about the bio even if it is unflattering or incorrect. Often living family members are listed due to the information supplied from the obit.

4. Findagrave administration uses fake "member names" They use these names to keep track of individuals who create lots of memorials. They can track a members activity on the findagrave site using the members computer's IP address that was available to them when the person registered to use... (Read the full review)

Free it is not

Came on this site from another one of those 'best 10 ancestry sites' and it said it was free - it is to join then it costs. OK I did'nt expect much but when the so called reviewing experts claim free then free it should be. I'm off back to my other site where I can get the information I need. Oh yes, it reverts back to US settings every search. Great if you live in the USA. Sorry not good as far as I'm concerned.

Find A Grave: Insecure and Undependable Website
11 January 2012
Reviewer: Beth from New Mexico, USA

Clearly, this is not a genealogical website that I would recommend to anyone. Initially, it seemed to be very useful for those who wished to share their genealogical research. However, I discovered that the site is insecure and that your entries can be altered without your knowledge or permission. This was extensively done in my case. The security damage included the altering and removing of biographical data that I had entered, the removal and relocation of my entry photographs, the changing of my own and other contributors' names, and the incorrect switching around of cross reference numbers to my different family memorials. Importantly, this experience demonstrated that the information available on this website could be extremely unreliable to any viewers. My efforts to delete my entries, a stated option, proved very difficult since they were put back on the site afterwards with my name changed to "anonymous." When I objectively complained of this, I was never given any explanation. Rather, I was blocked from being able to access my account and my own extensive family virtual memorial collection with the word "unauthorized!" showing up on my account. Later, this hostile response also... (Read the full review)

Hoarding - Easter Eggs - Find A Grave
12 August 2011
Reviewer: Barry N. Cain from Northern Virginia

Dear "Find A Grave" Staff,

The Name of your site makes it Very Clear.

However, For Me, your Format was misleading. Your Format seemed to have been developed to share Family Heritage. With places for Birth & Death Info, A Bio, Ability to Link family members, Up to a 5 Photo Download, the Cemetery Info. I was Thrilled - How Wonderful - I Thought.

>>> Here is My Constructive Criticism:
I have never complained about the Format in the Past. However, many cities and cemeteries are missing. There is No place for Marriage Info, Children, Religion, Occupation, Adoption Info, Immigration Info, Wills & Deeds, Cause of Death, ETC. (Many have told me that some of these bits of Info had an Impact on various Departed Loved Ones.)

After interacting with quite a few "Control Freaks" that have created Thousands of Empty Profiles - I now see, from my Actual Experiences, what your site is all about.

Profiles are created with the Cemetery Info - However, many times the Birth & Death Info is left blank, the Bios are left empty, No family Links have been made & ocassionally you might find a Gravestone Photo. So basically Thousands of Loved Ones profiles... (Read the full review)

please be aware of complaints posted about this site

Please check out pissed consumer. Or just google findagrave complaints. I was a member for over 5 years. I had some of my memorial deleted and reposted by another findagrave member. When I complainted they blocked me from my account. I finally got access to my account but this happened to me again. The ideal of this site is great, but the people in charge don't care. They do make money off the information people post here. Please be aware of what goes on before you put your time and hard work into posting only to have it taken away from you & credit given to someone else.
